Dr. Agaredech Jemaneh’s impact on Ethiopian journalism and education
Born in February 1966, Agaredech Jemaneh overcame societal norms in a country with limited female presence in print journalism. Her passion for learning was nurtured by her parents at a small private school. Despite facing challenges, her mother recognized her potential, guiding her towards education.
Agaredech’s educational journey led her to Netsanet Birhan School, where she spent five years honing her skills and fostering lasting friendships. She then transitioned to a public school, excelling academically and advancing to the seventh grade with outstanding ministry examination results.


Through the passage of time, she found herself at Misrak Comprehensive Secondary School, known for its comprehensive curriculum. It was here that her Amharic teacher inspired her to write an insightful essay, highlighting her exceptional writing abilities and comprehension skills during her high school years.
A significant academic milestone occurred in 1983 when she joined the Department of Ethiopian Languages and Literature at Addis Ababa University, igniting her passion for education and print journalism.


Throughout her university years, she was fortunate to have influential mentors who guided her literary journey, focusing on the exploration of female participation in Ethiopian literature. Her thesis presented for her BA degree, a ground-breaking work on this topic, was backed by thorough research and analysis, solidifying her reputation as a promising scholar.
In 1987, Agaredech embarked on her professional journalism journey as a reporter at Addis Zemen newspaper, later transitioning to become a cultural columnist. Through her column, she delved into and highlighted her country’s artistic pursuits, enriching readers’ understanding with her perceptive insights.
Agaredech’s expertise and dedication led her to participate in training programs for aspiring journalists and writers, organized by governmental and private institutions. These programs allowed her to share her vast knowledge of journalism and literature with future professionals across various platforms. In 1991, she pursued her Master’s studies in foreign language and literature while also resuming her column on women’s issues.


In 1996, she transitioned to an educator role first at the former Ethiopian Mass Media Institute and then in 2001 at Addis Ababa University in the literature and journalism and communication teaching disciplines, combining her love for journalism with education. She soon became a highly respected teacher in print media, attracting aspiring journalists seeking her guidance and mentorship.
Agaredech’s pursuit of knowledge led her to study abroad, earning a Ph.D. from the University of Tromsø in Norway. Despite the challenges of balancing family and academic responsibilities, her steadfast dedication and family support helped her achieve this milestone.
Her role extends well beyond teaching and learning. She has served as a board member for several prominent organizations academic institutions, including the Ethiopian Press Agency, and the Ethiopian Media Authority. She is also skilled in conducting thematic and problem-solving research, primarily within the media and public relations sectors.
In August 2025, she successfully convened the East African Communication Association conference, marking its first-ever meeting in Ethiopia. Her research findings on various topics—such as journalism and education, journalism and women, and women in media—have been published in several reputable international journals and books. Furthermore, she is an active member of professional associations like the Ethiopian Media Women Association, the East African Communication Association, and the Societal Friends of Ethiopian Studies
Today, Dr. Agaredech is an esteemed figure, harmoniously merging her journalism and teaching careers to inspire and educate the next generation of media professionals.
