Reeyot Alemu, born in Adama in 1980, has led an extraordinary life filled with resilience, passion for knowledge, and unwavering commitment to justice. Her journey from the enchanting town of Nazareth to the vibrant city of Addis Ababa, driven by her father’s career as a respected judge, set the stage for her remarkable contributions to education, literature, journalism, and advocacy.

Her early years were marked by a thirst for knowledge and a gift for storytelling. Her childhood was filled with love and support from her parents, who provided her with everything she needed.

After completing high school, Reeyot wasted no time and enrolled in a comprehensive teacher training course, at Kotebe College of Teachers’ Training Institute (KCTE). She emerged from the program with a teaching certificate and embarked on a fulfilling career in primary education in Addis Ababa, leaving a lasting impact on her students. Her dedication to education led her to pursue further studies at KCTE, where she obtained a Diploma in English Language and Literature.

She deepened her understanding of the language through a summer program at Addis Ababa University and eventually earned a bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts  from the same institution.

In addition to her teaching career, Reeyot fearlessly shared her poignant insights with the world through her writings. She honed her skills as an editor for the Addis Press Newspaper and as a reporter for the Ethiopian Review website. Her dedication to truth and justice led to her arrest in June 2010, after she courageously criticized the TPLF/EPRDF regime. Despite facing immense pressure and torture, she remained resolute in her principles and endured over four years of imprisonment. Even in the confines of her prison cell, she continued her mission by secretly crafting articles that exposed the regime’s injustices.

Upon her release, Reeyot found renewed hope and continued her advocacy work. Her resilience and commitment to justice garnered international recognition from well-regarded institutions such as the International Women Media  Foundation (IWMF), Human Rights Watch, and UNESCO. Despite facing continued harassment by the regime, she received invitations from various Ethiopian and international organizations, where she shared her invaluable insights.

Finding refuge in the United States, Reeyot received medical treatment and continued to make a profound impact on the world. In exile, she pursued her journalistic career and work at her own Online media outlet called Mengizem media as a producer and  host in various programs. Her love for literature led her to develop programs that shared the wisdom and insights gained from her extensive reading experiences, benefiting others and fostering a reading culture.

Residing in the United States, Reeyot remains steadfast in her mission to shed light on Ethiopia’s rich history and ensure that its narratives are accurately portrayed. She actively engages in diverse training programs to enhance her professional skills and voluntarily participates in discussions on national issues. With hopeful anticipation, she dreams of a future where she can further increase her capacity and contribute to the betterment of lives worldwide.
