A tale of dedication and resilience: How Kidist Belay rose to prominence in journalism
Kidist Belay, hailing from Menen, was nurtured by her family and received a solid moral upbringing that laid the foundation for her successful career as a journalist. Her education at Entoto Technical and Vocational School paved the way for her future achievements in journalism. It was at the national station, “Ethiopian Radio,” where she discovered her passion, starting with the beloved program “Kelijoch Alem” that resonated with listeners across the country.
Despite her initial surprise at starting her career in the field at a young age, she embraced the challenges that came her way and thrived as a freelancer before eventually transitioning to a role as a reporter in the Amharic department in 1997. Through steadfast dedication and hard work, she steadily climbed the ranks over the years, eventually reaching the position of Director at the station.
Kidist held onto the values of love and ethics that had initially drawn her to the profession, and her passion for journalism only intensified with each passing day. After graduating with a Diploma in Radio Journalism in 2001, she continued to excel in her role, eventually taking on leadership responsibilities in the planning and monitoring department across multiple languages, demonstrating her versatility and unwavering commitment to her craft.
After achieving success at Ethiopian Radio and Television, she pursued higher education at Addis Ababa University, graduating with a degree in Journalism and Communication in 2009. She cherishes the memories of the colleagues and mentors who influenced her path. Her enduring impact is seen in her significant involvement in social and entertainment programs, leaving a lasting mark on both audiences and peers.
Engaging in a range of social causes during her tenure at Ethiopian Radio and Television, she has played a pivotal role in addressing pressing issues. Beyond her professional endeavors, she has actively participated in the Media Women Professionals Association in Ethiopia, advocating for gender equality and empowerment within the media industry. Furthermore, she took on the role of coordinator at the Organization Anti-HIV AIDS office demonstrating her commitment to public health awareness and education and
In the “Wabit Ethiopia” association, which she founded with her colleagues at Ethiopian Radio, she encouraged employees to visit their country’s tourist destinations and make them proud of their country.
After she leave from Ethiopian Radio and Television in 2009, she spent a year as deputy manager at the humanitarian organization “Vision on Africa” before taking on a role at the Addis Ababa Women, Children, and Youth Bureau. While working as the head of communication, she eventually relocated to Europe in 2013, starting a new chapter in Switzerland. Kidist Belay is now working for the Swiss Government as a librarian .
