Who is Enat Alem Meles, the Minister of Communications Service?

Enat Alem Melese began her primary education at NotreDam school Dire Dawa. Later, due to her father’s work situation, she moved from Dire Dawa to Bishoftu, where she continued her studies at Emperor Lebna Dengel School. She completed her secondary education at Bishoftu Secondary School.
Mrs. Enat Alem earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Journalism from Addis Ababa University. From an early age, she had a strong love for reading, and during her school years she actively participated in various literary competitions.


Mrs. Enat Alem Melese served for 13 years at the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation, rising from reporter to Deputy Director General. In addition to news work, she was also involved in program production.


Through her work, Mrs. Enat Alem gained opportunities to travel to various parts of the country as well as abroad, returning with valuable experience.


Mrs. Enat Alem worked on preparing lineups to assess program quality and public acceptance, developing professional work-division principles to guide staff, and ensuring their implementation. She also played her part in implementing the ETV journalists’ industrial average, helping to move away from traditional practices and lay a proper foundation during the transition period.
She carried out training and follow-up activities to ensure that professionals at EBC performed their work in a professional manner.


Mrs. Enat Alem contributed to establishing a professional career structure within the institution, developing institutional professional processes and a style book, and ensuring that formats and productions followed time-based programming standards. She also played a role in initiating research activities.
She informed management of the need for more than one channel; after extensive debate, the idea was accepted and entered the main study phase.
Beyond enabling the institution to have a clear job structure, she ensured the preparation of a manual that could be useful for the institution in the future, covering editorial policy, operational regulations, and especially codes of ethics.
Mrs. Enat Alem was appointed as a division head during the leadership change in 2006 E.C., and from 2007 E.C. until her departure from the institution in 2010 E.C., she served as Deputy Director General of the television station and Head of News and Current Affairs.


After EBC


After ETV, Mrs. Enat Alem was requested to lead the Addis Ababa City Administration Television. On August 16, 2010 E.C., she began her role as Chief Executive Officer of Addis Media Network. During her two-year tenure, she worked to transform the institution into a public broadcaster and to improve it in terms of technology, human resources, and content. During this period, she led efforts to upgrade Addis Ababa media to HD broadcasting standards and to launch 24-hour broadcasting services. She also worked on rebranding the institution as Addis Media Network.
During her time at both institutions, she played a role in transforming ETV into a broadcasting corporation, from drafting the proposal and getting it approved by parliament to ensuring its expression in formats. Similarly, at Addis Media Network, she worked on revising the proclamation to make the station a public broadcaster, securing its approval, and implementing it.


After Addis Media Network


After Addis Media Network, Mrs. Enat Alem Melese served for two years starting in 2013 E.C. at a social trust fund established to mobilize resources for volunteer activities in Addis Ababa. She then went on to serve as Head of the Addis Ababa City Administration Communication Bureau, where she continues to contribute by strengthening and extending a robust communication structure down to the grassroots level. Today, on Meskerem 9, 2018 E.C., she has been appointed as Minister of Communication Services with the rank of Minister.
